Group vs. Transient: The Most Consequential Mix Decision in Your Calendar
Every room you commit to a group is a room you've removed from the transient market. The question is whether that trade was worth making.

Managing the balance between group and transient business is one of the most strategically complex decisions in hotel revenue management. Groups provide certainty — a contracted block of rooms at a known rate.
But that certainty comes at a cost: the inventory is committed, often months in advance, at rates that may be below what transient would have paid. The optimal group/transient balance depends on the property's demand profile, the time of year, the group's rate relative to expected transient, and the displacement risk.
Getting it right requires a clear view of transient pace at the time the group decision is made — not after the block is contracted.
